DUMAS (Alexandre). Grand Dictionnaire de cuisine. Paris, Alp - Lot 16
DUMAS (Alexandre). Grand Dictionnaire de cuisine. Paris, Alphonse Lemerre, 1873, large 4°, 115 p. + 24 p. appendix, full publisher's cloth (edges rubbed, inner hinges split, numerous spots and russets). First edition. Le Grand dictionnaire de cuisine, by Alexandre Dumas, is a monumental culinary dictionary celebrating the glory of good food and the history of French cuisine. Grandson of an innkeeper, a fine cook, organizer of parties and sumptuous meals, friend of many of the great chefs of his time, Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870) was one of the finest epicurean gourmets of his time. During the last year of his life, he retired to his house in Finistère, with his cook Marie, to write this final work of his monumental literary oeuvre: "I want to close my work of five hundred volumes with a cookbook".
