PETRONIO (Arthur). “Compositions” (1979). Set of 3 gouaches and inks on paper, signed in the lower right corner. Dimensions of support and subject: (3 x) 30 x 25 cm. A Swiss violinist and composer, friend of Kandinsky, Cocteau, and Picasso, and member of the Groupe Moderne d’Art de Liège, Arthur Pétronio (1897–1983) was introduced to painting by the French painter Henri Le Fauconnier. Beginning in 1920, he organized Dada evenings in Amsterdam. Influenced by the Italian Futurist movement, he developed compositions that were part musical, part poetic, which he called “Verbophonie.” A multifaceted artist, he left his mark on the literary and musical avant-garde.
