GIBBON (John). Last Summer's Expedition against the Sioux. P - Lot 303
GIBBON (John). Last Summer's Expedition against the Sioux. Philadelphia, Hardy & Mahony, 1877, 4°, full brown percaline with gold titling on upper board. Photostatic copy of pp. 271-304, and 665-694, of the 2nd volume of "The American Catholic Review", published January-October 1877, featuring these two important articles by General Gibbon. "No account of Custer's battle is complete without a careful examination of Colonel Gibbon's writings." The Battle of Custer (or Battle of Little Big Horn) on June 25, 1876 remains one of the most famous military defeats in American history. This confrontation between General Custer's forces and a coalition of Native American tribes led by Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse marked a decisive turning point in the Indian wars of the Far West. Extremely rare.
