Betty Carsons Gallery label on back. Frame size: 124 x 98 cm; subject: 122.5 x 96.5 cm. Enrico Donati (1909-2008) was an American surrealist painter. Born in Italy, he moved to the United States in 1934 and studied at the New School for Social Research. He exhibited for the first time in 1942 and was noticed by André Breton and Marcel Duchamp, in exile in New York. The three artists became friends and Donati was one of the main organizers of the "Exposition internationale du surréalisme", held in 1947 at the Maeght gallery in Paris. Together with Duchamp, he designed the exhibition catalog and produced a slipcase entitled "Prière de toucher". He then distanced himself from Surrealism, moving his art towards a constructivist form. He finally joined the Spatialist movement, alongside Lucio Fontana.
