BADARO (Clea). "Les Cousines". Oil on canvas, signed on the lower right corner, titled on the back, and mounted in a wooden frame. Frame size: 71 x 97 cm; subject: 59.5 x 85 cm. Born in Egypt in 1913, Clea Badaro moved to Switzerland at an early age and trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lausanne, before returning to Egypt in 1936. She painted scenes of everyday Egyptian life, as well as numerous portraits and landscapes. She exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1950 and 1952, and at the São Paulo Biennale in 1953. The last volume of the Alexandria Quartet by Lawrence Durrell bears the artist's first name: "Clea". They had met in the Ambron family's iconic home, where the British author had rented space from 1941 to 1945.
