MAGRITTE (René). Autograph letter signed, dated September 5, - Lot 666
MAGRITTE (René). Autograph letter signed, dated September 5, 1955, addressed to Paul Dewalhens, French-speaking Belgian poet (1902-1991). 1 sheet 4° of 20 lines (perforation holes on left edge). "Do you know Marcel Lecomte? If you know him, you'll be able to / measure his astonishment when he read the letter you sent me / and which I showed him, saying it was from you. He had thought / that your letter had been sent to me by Dewalhens, a professor at Louvain, and / his astonishment came from the change in the professor's style that he noticed when / reading your letter. If you don't know Marcel Lecomte, perhaps / by telling you that he doubts the reality of the things that astonish him, but / that he has an arsenal of references that he trusts with / wary assurance, you'll enjoy the pleasure / of imagining an unexpected effect of your letter./ I've read your letter and the two poems that respond so well / to the two paintings you've noticed. I love what you / write, and the poems I know you've published in magazines / have that rare quality of "making words speak". For a future / issue of Carte d'après nature, I would ask you for "something", / because without your collaboration in this one, I sincerely believe that this / publication would have even less reason to exist than it already has so / little./ Yours sincerely / René Magritte".
