ERNST (Max). La Femme 100 têtes. Avis au lecteur par André B - Lot 625
ERNST (Max). La Femme 100 têtes. Avis au lecteur par André Breton. Paris, Editions du Carrefour, 1929, 4°, long-grained black half-maroquin with stripes, gilt separating fillets on covers, smooth spine, gilt author, title and date, gilt head, fancy paper lining and endpapers, covers and spine cons. (horizontal tear across the width of one plate, restored). First edition printed in 1000 copies, numbered 1/900 on tinted vellum, 3rd paper after 12 Japon and 88 Hollande. Max Ernst's first novel-collage. He composed it in 1929 while staying in the Ardèche. He had taken with him a number of 19th and early 20th century periodicals, the engravings of which had attracted him to the bookshops along the banks of the Seine. Illness had confined him to bed for a fortnight of intense mental activity, during which he created the work's 147 collages "with determination and method", according to his own testimony. Each collage is accompanied by a "legend-poem" composed by Ernst.
