Paris, Librairie Charpentier et Fasquelle, 1900, large 8°, 519 p., full green morocco, boards illustrated with a beautiful mosaic and gilded floral composition, spine with 4 bands, author, title and year gilded, 3 mosaic figures between the bands, gilded head on witnesses, gilded edges, gilded and dotted fillet on the edges, spine flaps edged and decorated with gilded floral and mosaic filleting at the corners, green silk lining decorated with tone-on-tone floral compositions, marbled paper double endpapers, covers and spine cons, green half-maroquin flap folder, spine of folder with 4 gold-titled bands, slipcase (spine of folder faded) (binding signed S. David 1921). Engraved bookplate of Dr. René Ravaud. First edition, signed by the publisher. Printed especially for Monsieur Fernand Desmoulin (1853-1914), a French painter and engraver who was close to Émile Zola. Enriched with some thirty original watercolor drawings in the text by Denis Volx, the first signed, the others monogrammed. Denis Volx, the pseudonym used by Louis Denis-Valvérane (1870-1943), was a painter born in Manosque, close to Frédéric Mistral and a pupil of Jean-Paul Laurens. A remarkable and rare copy in an elegant binding, enriched with fine watercolors by Denis Volx.
