BAUDELAIRE (Charles). Les Fleurs du Mal. Paris, Poulet-Malas - Lot 20
BAUDELAIRE (Charles). Les Fleurs du Mal. Paris, Poulet-Malassis et de Broise, 1857, in-8, faux-titre, title in red and black, 248 p., 2 unnumbered ff. of table, br. (small wetness on spine and upper left corner of front cover, inside very fresh). Complete first edition of the 6 condemned poems. First edition copy with the characteristics of a good cover and typographical errors: "Feurs" instead of "Fleurs" on pp. 31 and 108, page 45 is paginated 44 and "captieux" instead of "capiteux" in the 1st line of page 201). The work was prosecuted, and on August 20, 1857, the criminal court ordered the deletion of six poems: "Les Bijoux", "Le Lethé", "À celle qui est trop gaie", "Lesbos", "Femmes damnées", "Les Métamorphoses du vampire", and obliged the publisher to destroy his edition in order to effect this deletion. Most of the edition, which had been out for five or six weeks, had already sold out, with only 200 copies (out of 1,100) remaining in store; rather than destroy these copies, the pages containing the condemned pieces were cut out (Talvart et Place, I, 284; J.-J. Launay, 26; Oberlé, 212). A very rare and good copy.
