BAUDELAIRE (Charles). Les Epaves. With a frontispiece etchin - Lot 13
BAUDELAIRE (Charles). Les Epaves. With a frontispiece etching by Félicien Rops. A'dam, à l'enseigne du Coq [Brux., Poulet-Malassis], 1866, in-12, 163 p., full cherry morocco, triple gilt fillet on covers, spine with 5 fillets of nerves, author, title, vintage and ornate gilt caissons, gilt edges, double gilt fillet on edges, bordered and filleted back covers, combed endpapers, bookplate of Gustave Nellens (small stain on lower cover, very slightly rubbed, pale russeting on warning leaf) (binding signed Canape, 1910). Largely original edition, printed (with Rops' etching on Chine) at 260 copies, numbered 1/250 on Hollande laid paper. This is the true first edition. A second edition, printed in "Bruxelles chez tous les libraires" the same year in an edition of 500 copies, is much less sought-after. Contains the six condemned pieces of the "Fleurs du mal" and 17 previously unpublished poems. Copy with 2 portraits of the author, including one engraved by Bracquemond. Bound without the book's mute cover. A fine copy.
