ROOSES (Max). Le Musée Plantin Moretus containing the life a - Lot 9
ROOSES (Max). Le Musée Plantin Moretus containing the life and work of Christophe Plantin and his successors the Moretus as well as a description of the museum and the collections it contains. Antwerp, G. Zazzarini, 1914, large folio, 407 p., full ivory vellum, top cover illustrated with the gilt compass mark of Christophe Plantin with the famous motto "Labore et Constantia", 4 ribbed spine, wine-lees morocco title page, slipcase. First edition printed in an edition of 500 on Van Gelder watermarked laid paper. 1/440 numbered from 61 to 500 (ex. no. 68). A rare and very interesting bibliophile's work on the history of the famous 16th-century Antwerp printing works of Christophe Plantin and his successors, who were active until 1876, when the premises, together with the printing works, archives and library, became a museum. A major interest of the book lies in the illustrations printed from the original copper plates and woodblocks from the museum: engravings by Lucas van Leyden, Wierickx, the Galle family, Goltzius, Hogenberg, Pontius, etc. A rare and beautiful copy.
