Musier fils, 1773, 4°, XL- 590 p., 27 folding plates, full contemporary brown calf, spine ribbed (binding worn, spines cracked, spotting especially at the end, stamped (worn binding, spines cracked, spotting especially at the end, stamp on title). First edition of this famous work "which meticulously describes its marine chronometers" (Cardinal). Berthoud and Pierre Le Roy were competing to perfect the marine chronometer in the late 1760s. Berthoud ended up the lion's share of the awards, having been judged to have the best design.
