ANNENKOV (attributed to George). "Project for a theater set". Watercolor on paper with gouache highlights, monogrammed on the lower right edge. On the right edge of the drawing, a strip filled with several sketches in graphite with annotations in Russian and French. Size : 44,5 x 36 cm (+ 44,5 x 9,5 cm for the marginal strip) (qqs light folds, 2 marg. tears reinforced with scotch tape on the back). Graduate of the fine arts in St. Petersburg, Georges Annenkov or Youri Annenkoff (1889-1974) is, since 1913, a passionate painter of avant-garde and decorator of theater. He attended the school of Zeidenberg, at the same time as Marc Chagall. In 1911, he left for Paris where he frequented the studio of Félix Vallotton. From 1913 to 1924 he returned to Russia. In 1924, he was forced to leave the Soviet Union and moved to Paris. While continuing to paint and draw, he worked more for the cinema. As a costume designer and set designer he was involved in a hundred plays and ballets and in about sixty films. In the 1950s, he was Max Ophüls' favorite costume designer.
