ROUSSELET (Louis). - Lot 567
ROUSSELET (Louis). The India of the Rajahs. Trip to Central India and the presidencies of Bombay and Bengal. Second edition containing 317 woodcuts drawn by our most famous artists and six maps. P., Hachette, 1877, very large 4°, [4]-807 p., edited polychrome binding, gilt edges (rubbed jaws and caps, lower jaws of the first plate split, blunt corners) (binding by A. Souze). Illustrated edition of 6 maps (4 colour hors-texte), 217 engravings very faithfully drawn by a pleiad of artists of the time among whom E. Bayard, A. Marie, A. de Neuville, P. Philippoteaux according to the author's sketches and photographs. The frontispiece represents Louis Rousselet in Sirdar costume from the court of Bhopal. For the rest, this beautiful iconography reveals a predilection for architecture and for portraits of personalities captured on the spot. Scenes of animated groups also form anecdotal digressions that punctuate the whole.
