Manuscript courses: two "university" courses given in Latin - Lot 84
Manuscript courses: two "university" courses given in Latin in 1803-1804, after the suppression of the University of Louvain by the French in 1797. These two courses, strictly contemporary, seem to be in the same hand [?]. 1°: "Tractatus de Motu 1803-4": title, 186 p., 1 blank page; "Quaestiones de Motu 1803-4": title, 122-[4] p., 5 printed folding plates (CHBecker ex lov [aniensi], i.e. "de Louvain") and 7 handwritten folding plates, manuscript 8° in Latin in one hand from the beginning of the 19th c., half-brown calf of the period (plates and guard sheets renewed, traces of cold-stamped coats of arms on the counterflats). On the front of the front guard sheet, the handwritten mention: "Ex libris M. Obert / 1804". 2°: "Tractatus de Aere. Item de Sono. 1804 ": title, white verso, 108 p., 1 white sheet; " Questiones de Aere 1804 ": title, 39 p., 3 white p., 4 printed folding plates (CHBecker ex lov.); " Tractatus de Sono 1804 ": title, 50 p.; " Quaestiones de Sono 1804 ", title, 13 p., single-handed manuscript in Latin 8° from the beginning of the 19th c., contemporary brown half calf (spine worn, plates and endpapers renewed). "The engravings, scientific or ornamental, appear in the courts in the 17th century. The students acquired them from booksellers-printers. They were generally anonymous. However, we know Charles Becker, a draftsman and engraver who had a workshop in Louvain during the second half of the 17th century. His plates were still prized in 1775" (Françoise Hiraux and Françoise Mirguet, La collection des cours manuscrits d'Ancien régime de l'Université catholique de Louvain). We can therefore add that "his plates were still in demand in 1800", thus showing the high level of these courses, probably given privately and without identification of the person giving them. The University was suppressed in 1797, in application of the law of 15 September 1793 which abolished all the colleges and universities of the Republic. Its official successor was
