[19th-Century Portraits].—A collection of two oblong in-12 a - Lot 897
[19th-Century Portraits].—A collection of two oblong in-12 albums containing more than 130 portrait photographs in Disderi format (ca. 1855–1860). An important collection depicting the Belgian and European intellectual elite of the 1860s. All prints are captioned in graphite. Among these numerous portraits are important figures in the history of science: Dr. Seutin (inventor of the starched bandage), Dr. Paul Broca (discoverer of the speech area in the brain), Dr. Ambroise Tardieu (founder of modern forensic medicine), and Dr. Luigi Verardini, an eminent clinician and professor of medical therapy at the University of Bologna. The inclusion of Belgian professor Jean-Sébastien Stas (who determined the atomic masses of the elements) and the great German chemist Justus von Liebig demonstrates the scientific scope of this collection. Among the other portraits, note the mayor of Brussels, André-Napoléon Fontainas, the exiled writer Victor Hugo, the Austrian explorer Ida Pfeiffer (one of the very first women in the world to have completed two solo circumnavigations of the globe), and Jules Géruzet, one of the official photographers and portraitists of Brussels high society. A very fine collection in good condition (albums are damaged).
