MILLER (I.L.). The Chinese Girl. Tientsin, Peiyang Press, 19 - Lot 885
MILLER (I.L.). The Chinese Girl. Tientsin, Peiyang Press, 1932, 8°, 108 pp., frontispiece and 26 collotype plates, publisher’s red cloth, dust jacket (dust jacket rubbed and soiled). First edition translated from the original Russian manuscript. I.L. Miller, known by the pseudonym Mr. Grin, was the editor-in-chief of the Russian daily newspaper “Nasha Zaria” in Tianjin (a port city in China). In this book, he explores the lives of “sing-song girls” (courtesans), portraying Chinese women, most of whom were employed as actresses, singers, or cabaret dancers. “My sole intention was to recount what I observed during the two years I devoted to the in-depth study of the manners and customs of young Chinese women.” A rare and fine copy.
