EVANS (Walker). Havana 1933. Paris, Contrejour, 1989, 4°, pu - Lot 860
EVANS (Walker). Havana 1933. Paris, Contrejour, 1989, 4°, publisher’s full black percaline binding, dust jacket. Ex-libris stamp by Peter Bouhof, art director, designer, and exhibition curator. French first edition. In 1933, Walker Evans (1903–1975) traveled to Cuba to illustrate a book denouncing the Machado dictatorship. The book is a poignant account of daily life, poverty, and the tense atmosphere in Havana at that time. This work is considered one of the first major modern documentary photoessays.
