"View. The Modern Magazine." Nos. 6 and 11/12 (1st series), No. 3 (2nd series), No. 4 (4th series), Nos. 2, 4, and 6 (5th series), Nos. 1, 2, and 3 (7th series). N.Y., 1941–1947, 10 issues in 8°, 4°, or folio format, loose-leaf or stapled. First edition. "View" was an American literary and arts magazine published from 1940 to 1947 by the artist and writer Charles Henri Ford and the film critic Parker Tyler. This magazine is known for introducing Surrealism to the American public. Many contributors lived in Europe but sought refuge in the United States during World War II, bringing with them the avant-garde ideas of the time and precipitating a shift in the center of the art world from Paris to New York. It attracted contributions from writers such as Henry Miller, Lawrence Durrell, Paul Bowles, Brion Gysin, André Breton, Raymond Roussel, Albert Camus, Jean-Paul Sartre, Jean Genet, and Jorge Luis Borges, as well as artists such as Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee, Fernand Léger, Georgia O’Keeffe, Man Ray, Joan Miró, Alexander Calder, Isamu Noguchi, Marc Chagall, René Magritte, and Jean Dubuffet. A beautiful, very well-preserved collection.
