"Plages." An artist-run journal edited by Roberto Gutiérrez. - Lot 786
"Plages." An artist-run journal edited by Roberto Gutiérrez. Nos. 21, 37, 52, 54, 57, 63, 64, 70, 72, 74, 82, 85, 90, 91, 100–113, and 115–127. Boulogne-Billancourt, 1983–2010, 40 volumes presented in various formats. First edition printed in a run of a few hundred copies. In May 1978, Roberto Gutiérrez (1939–2011), along with his partner Madeleine and friends from the Salon de la jeune sculpture, founded the magazine “Plages.” Over the years, hundreds of artists contributed to the magazine, including regulars such as Gérard Brignolais, Lucien Bouvier, and André Chabot, as well as occasional stars like Beuys, Bram Bogart, Corneille, Ernest Pignon Ernest, and Vostell. To promote it, Roberto Gutierrez decided to take a bold approach and set up his stall in front of the FIAC. His director at the time found this amusing and offered him a booth inside. “Plages” would thus go on to participate in the world’s largest contemporary art fairs, notably those in Basel and Miami—all without losing any of its political commitment. Each magazine is painted, cut, scraped, folded, crumpled, torn, glued, sprinkled, and more. Natural objects—whether found or made specifically for the occasion—are incorporated. Some issues are true “art-object books”: a safe, a handbag, a heart-shaped box, a travel trunk, and so on. Each copy is unique and a work of art in its own right. Several hundred creators have contributed—mostly visual artists, but also architects, photographers, poets, musicians... A beautiful collection.
