GAILLIARD (Jean-Jacques). A set of two signed autograph lett - Lot 719
GAILLIARD (Jean-Jacques). A set of two signed autograph letters, the first dated July 28, 1965, and addressed to Pierre Aelberts. One 4° folio in black ink, illustrated with a drawing by Gailliard reproduced in purple. In this letter, the painter Jean-Jacques Gailliard (1890–1976) proposes to the publisher Pierre Aelberts that he write reviews on James Ensor and Michel de Ghelderode. He reveals that he possesses the most extensive collection of Ghelderode’s correspondence and invites Aelberts to his home in Brussels to consult it, asserting that there is enough material there to publish a beautiful book. The second letter is dated July 30, 1965, and is also addressed to Pierre Aelberts. One 4° sheet written in black ink on ivory paper. In this letter, Jean-Jacques Gailliard thanks Pierre Aelberts for a rare book on James Ensor. He recalls his youthful memories of the summer of 1913 in Ostend, where he frequented Ensor’s studio with his father and sketched prominent figures of the time. He also mentions possessing documents on the writer Michel de Ghelderode. / Set of 2 items.
