CORNEILLE (Guillaume van Beverloo, known as). Set of 4 autog - Lot 676
CORNEILLE (Guillaume van Beverloo, known as). Set of 4 autograph documents: 1 letter consisting of 3 pages, numbered 1 through 3, and 1 note of a few lines. A letter written in fuchsia ink, in Dutch and French, containing numerous corrections, sent from Paris on November 30, 1953, to Florent Welles (1922–2000), a sculptor and key figure in the Cobra movement in Brussels. This collection offers insight into the artist’s creative process and the Parisian avant-garde in the fall of 1953. Corneille opens up about his artistic struggles and quotes the poet Hendrik Marsman. The artist invites Welles to Paris and poetically recalls his stay in the Balearic Islands with his partner Henny Riemens (photographer for the Cobra group, 1928–1992), contrasting the urban grayness with nostalgia for the light of the desert. After praising Karel Appel’s success in Brussels, Corneille analyzes the aesthetic debates in Paris, contrasting Michel Tapié with Charles Estienne. He lists a few names from the Salon d’octobre: Poliakoff, Dova, Sugaï, and himself. In the note written in black ink, Corneille thanks his host for the wonderful night he spent at his home.
