APPEL (Karel). Set of 2 signed autograph letters, dated 1953 - Lot 610
APPEL (Karel). Set of 2 signed autograph letters, dated 1953, addressed to Florent Welles (1922–2000). 2 sheets, 4° format, in black ink on loose paper (creases and signs of wear). Text in Dutch. Handwritten letters from Karel Appel’s youth, written while he was living in Paris and addressed to his friend Florent Welles, a cabinetmaker, sculptor, and behind-the-scenes figure in the Brussels art scene. The correspondence offers a glimpse into the artist’s precarious daily life in Paris during the winter of 1953, marked by financial and material hardships. In the letters, Appel describes his cultural outings, mentioning two events in the Parisian art scene toward the end of 1953: the Le Corbusier exhibition and the exhibition of masterpieces from the São Paulo Museum at the Musée de l’Orangerie. Both letters include warm greetings from Toni Sluyter, the painter’s first wife and muse. A loose slip of paper is enclosed, on which is written: “Beste / Florent / Ik kom zo / terug / I’ll be right back / K. Appel.” / Set of 3 pieces.
