VIERENDEEL (Arthur). Architectural Construction in Cast Iron - Lot 594
VIERENDEEL (Arthur). Architectural Construction in Cast Iron, Iron, and Steel. Leuven, A. Uystpruyst; Paris, Vve Ch. Dunod, 1902, oblong folio, 135 plates (black-and-white and color plates, some fold-out), brown half-percale, smooth spine with gold lettering (spine damaged, covers rubbed, internal hinge reinforced hinge, scattered faint pinholes, vertical crease on the first and last pages). First edition, signed by the author. Atlas only (without the text volume). This treatise is considered a major work in the history of structural analysis and 19th-century metal architecture. Arthur Vierendeel was a professor at the University of Leuven, famous for inventing the Vierendeel truss, a truss without diagonal members. The atlas details the steel structures of iconic buildings and infrastructure built primarily in Paris, including: the dome of the former Grain Exchange, the Sainte-Geneviève Library, the Palais de l’Industrie built for the 1855 Exposition, Victor Baltard’s Central Market of Paris, and the National Library.
