[PIEYRE DE MANDIARGUES (André)].—MORION (Pierre). *The Engli - Lot 177
[PIEYRE DE MANDIARGUES (André)].—MORION (Pierre). *The Englishman Described in the Locked Castle*. Oxford and Cambridge, no publisher [Paris, Jean-Jacques Pauvert], 1953, 8°, [6]-145-[8] pp., Bradel binding in full fancy paper, title label on smooth spine, cover preserved. (gray cover made of heavy paper with the title “L’Anglais” in red, framed by a double red line on a label) (minor discoloration on several pages; p. 21 partially detached). The book’s design (choice of typeface and layout) was created by Hans Bellmer. This edition was also intended to be illustrated with engravings by Bellmer, but delays on the artist’s part led Jean-Jacques Pauvert to publish it without illustrations. First edition printed in a run of 350 numbered copies not sold commercially. The date of June 2, 1953, appearing on the colophon, marks the coronation of Queen Elizabeth of England. The book was banned for the first time on June 20, 1955 (Pia, 63, which attributes this first edition to the publisher Éric Losfeld). In fact, Losfeld published the second edition, which is a phototype reproduction of the Pauvert edition with a red-and-green cover overlaid with a tartan paper dust jacket; Dutel, 1016). A classic of 20th-century erotic literature that recounts the final orgy of M. de Montcul, an Englishman as eccentric as he is sadistic and jaded, who has retired to his residence in Gamehuche, on the Côte de Vit.
