DICKENS (Charles). David Copperfield. With illustrations by - Lot 25
DICKENS (Charles). David Copperfield. With illustrations by H.K. Browne. London, Bradbury & Evans, 1850, large 8°, 624 pp., glossy light-brown half-calf with corner pieces, spine decorated with 5 raised bands, title labels in black morocco, marbled covers, edges, and endpapers (binding rubbed, slight fading of the engravings, a few plates oxidized, interior very fresh). Modern ex-libris by Fernand Spaak, Belgian lawyer, diplomat, and bibliophile (1923–1981). First edition illustrated with 38 en-plaque engravings by H. K. Browne (plus the frontispiece and the engraved title page bearing the date 1850). This first volume edition followed shortly after the serial publication that appeared during the year 1849/1850. Contains several first-print errors: “recal” instead of “recall” (p. 16); a mezzotint opposite page 482; Chapter XXVII appears on p. 282, whereas it is listed on page 283 in the index; the third “i” on p. VIII is misaligned; “screwed” instead of “screamed” (line 20, p. 132), etc. Influenced by the author’s own experiences, *David Copperfield* is undoubtedly one of the finest novels ever written about childhood. Dickens and Browne form the most famous author-illustrator duo in the history of English book illustration, and *Copperfield* was their greatest popular success. A fine copy./ IDEM. *The Pickwick Papers*. London, Chapman and Hall, 1837, fort 8°, XIV-609 pp., full glazed brown calfskin, spine with 5 gold-threaded raised bands, black morocco title label, combed endpapers (binding rubbed, inner hinge split, heavy brownish foxing on the engraved plates, text very fresh). First edition illustrated with 43 engravings by Robert Seymour and H. K. Browne. This edition features several characteristics of the first edition: five lines of footnotes (page 9); the “E” mark appears at the bottom of pages 25 and 27; page 261 is correctly signed “X2”; line 21 on page 400 reads “his friends,” etc. / 2 vols. in set.
