Paul Rapin de Thoyras (Castres, 1661–1725) came from a family of emigrated Savoyard Protestants. The Revocation of the Edict of Nantes forced him to leave France and move to England in 1686, then to Holland. In 1688, he followed the stadtholder to England, served with distinction in the war, and attained the rank of captain. In 1693, he became the tutor to the son of the Duke of Portland. He eventually settled in The Hague, where he worked diligently on his historical writings, notably his *History of England*, the first eight volumes of which he published in 1724. He died the following year. Rapin Thoyras had stopped at the reign of Charles I. David Durand continued his work up to the death of William III. Before Rapin Thoyras’s comprehensive work, no history of England as complete, accurate, and impartial as his had ever been published. According to Voltaire: “England was long indebted to him for the only good and complete history that had been written of that kingdom, and for the only impartial one that had been written of a country where people wrote solely out of partisan spirit: it was even the only history one could cite in Europe as approaching the perfection required of such works.” A fine copy.
