COZENS (Alexander). *Principles of Beauty, Relative to the H - Lot 5
COZENS (Alexander). *Principles of Beauty, Relative to the Human Head*. London, James Dixwell, 1778, in-plano, light-colored half-basane with corner pieces, spine with 6 raised bands, green title label (very partial), marbled paper covers (binding worn, foxing and browning on the endpapers, faint pinholes and scattered foxing). First edition illustrated with 19 out-of-text engravings. A treatise on aesthetics and artistic anatomy dedicated to the study of the proportions and criteria of beauty in the human face. Alexander Cozens (1717–1786) breaks down the facial features (eyes, nose, mouth) to study their variations and combinations. This edition includes loose transparent inserts, printed with different hairstyles, which the reader can superimpose onto the 17 engravings of bare faces to observe the impact of hair on the overall aesthetic perception. One tissue-paper insert is missing (for plate no. 6). A rare and fine copy.
