Baya. Algiers, ENAG Éditions; Éditions Bouchène, 1988, folio - Lot 560
Baya. Algiers, ENAG Éditions; Éditions Bouchène, 1988, folio, printed cover, publisher's pale yellow cloth with coldstamped titles. First edition with 12 color plates on coated paper. Texts by André Breton, Assia Djebar, Mouny Berrah, Jean de Maisonseul and Baya. Enriched with a small, dedicated ballpoint pen drawing. Baya (1931-1998) left Algiers for Paris in 1947, when her watercolors were exhibited at the Maeght gallery. Her paintings provoked a veritable craze among the Parisian elite, who marveled at her painterly naiveté; her catalog was even prefaced by André Breton. She stayed in France for several years, rubbing shoulders with Braque and Picasso, whom she met in 1949 in Vallauris, where she created ceramic sculptures at the Madoura studio. In 1953, she married musician El Hadj Mahfoud Mahieddine and settled in Blida, Algeria. Her work is composed of very bright colors, dominated by Indian pink and indigo blue.
