REDINHA (José). "Portrait of a Man from Lunda, Angola" (1936). Pastel on paper heightened with gouache, located, dated and signed in the lower left corner, mounted in a wooden frame. Frame size: 47 x 29 cm; subject: 40.5 x 25 cm. José Redinha (1905-1983) was an ethnologist and official of the Portuguese colonial administration in Angola. In 1936, he was hired by the Angola Diamond Company to help found the Dundo Museum, of which he became curator in 1942, thanks to his knowledge of indigenous languages, his close links with local political leaders and his skills in drawing and portraiture. His work includes a vast ethnographic output on various aspects of Angolan cultures, synthesized in *Ethnicités et cultures d'Angola* (1975). During his travels, he also documented the populations he studied with numerous photographs and drawings.
