ZOOLOGY - GENS (Eug.). A walk through the Antwerp Zoological - Lot 54
ZOOLOGY - GENS (Eug.). A walk through the Antwerp Zoological Gardens. Antwerp, Typ. J.-E. Buschmann, 1861, 8°, 188 p., 1 fold-out plan, qqs engravings hors texte, full green percaline with illustrated title on upper cover, smooth spine threaded and titled in gold. Double bookplate. First edition. Attached are 8 lithographed greeting cards, some on porcelain card, "on the occasion of the new social year" for the years 1857, 1859, 1860, 1861, 1862, 1863, 1864 and 1867 (format: 11 x 16 cm to 18 x 24 cm), as well as for the years 1906 to 1915 (the latter years are presented in the form of a small illustrated booklet, 1 undated), addressed by "Le Commissionnaire, le concierge et les domestiques de la Société royale de Zoologie d'Anvers". Also enclosed are 7 silver photographs from the period, including several portraits of Michel L'Hoëst, son of François L'Hoëst, the director who left his mark on the zoo in the late 19th century. This set is completed by a booklet on the Royal Zoological Society of Antwerp (extract from n° 489 of the Revue universelle internationale illustrée of January 20, 1904). Founded on July 21, 1843, the Antwerp Zoo is one of the oldest in the world, initially created to promote the natural sciences. Its first director was scientist and animal trainer Jacques Kets (1785-1865), who established the original cabinet of curiosities. The zoo grew around this historic core, with famous buildings such as the Egyptian Temple (1856). The zoo is world-famous for the arrival of the first okapi in 1919, and holds a birth record for this species. Despite extensive destruction, the zoo survived 2 wars, even serving as a place of imprisonment in 1944. A beautiful and rare set.
