ROPS - UZANNE (Octave). Art and the Idea. Contemporary illus - Lot 49
ROPS - UZANNE (Octave). Art and the Idea. Contemporary illustrated magazine published by Octave Uzanne. Literary dilettantism and curiosity. Volume one (January-June). Tome second (July-December). Paris, Ancienne Maison Quantin, 1892, 2 vols. large 8°, 432, 383-(1) p., numerous engravings in- and out-of-text, bradel brown half-percaline with corners, smooth spine with black morocco title-piece, cons. cover (headbands and corners rubbed, russeting on wove paper plates). First edition printed in 1660 copies. 1/600 copies num. on Vosges laid paper, 4th paper after 30 Japon, 15 Chine and 15 Whatman. This journal of art and ideas is undoubtedly one of the finest editorial adventures carried out by Octave Uzanne, who was almost exclusively responsible for editing and selecting the artists he brought together. This magazine is imbued with symbolism, Art Nouveau and new ideas on almost every page. It's not just bibliophilia, the love of fine books, that drives Octave Uzanne here; it's the dilettante aesthete, a lover of art in its entirety. There are lovely portraits of Eugène Grasset, Félicien Rops, Louis Morin, Albert Robida and others. We even enter the home of Octave Uzanne himself, in his amateur attic at 17 Quai Voltaire, and discover his bedroom (photograph), his vestibule (photograph). He gives his opinion on the authors of the time, those who should be highlighted, those who should be forgotten. Totally subjective and oriented according to the author's own tastes, this magazine is like a barely distorted reflection of his passions. Illustrators include Eugène Grasset, Félix Vallotton, Louis Morin, Robida, A. Lunois, A. Lepère, Carloz Schwabe, Eugène Courboin and many others.
