DICKENS (Charles). David Copperfield. With illustrations by - Lot 31
DICKENS (Charles). David Copperfield. With illustrations by H.K. Browne. London, Bradbury & Evans, 1850, fort 8°, 624 p., blond glazed half calf with corners, 5-rib spine, black morocco title-pieces, marbled boards, edges and endpapers (binding rubbed, slight discharge of engravings, a few plates oxidized, interior very fresh). Modern bookplate of Fernand Spaak, Belgian lawyer, diplomat and bibliophile (1923-1981). First edition illustrated with 38 hors-texte engravings by H. K. Browne (+ frontispiece and engraved title with 1850 date). This first volume edition closely follows the serial publication that appeared in 1849/1850. Contains several first issue remarks: "recal" instead of "recall" (p. 16); black manner engraving opposite page 482; chapter XXVII is on p. 282 whereas it is noted on page 283 in the index; the third i on p. viii is not aligned, "screwed" instead of "screamed" (line 20, p. 132), etc. Tinged with the author's own experience, David Copperfield is undoubtedly one of the finest novels written about childhood. "Dickens and Browne form the most famous author-illustrator duo in the history of English book illustration", and Copperfield was their "greatest popular success". A good copy.
