[RAYNAL (Guillaume, Thomas). Histoire philosophique et polit - Lot 12
[RAYNAL (Guillaume, Thomas). Histoire philosophique et politique des établissemens et du commerce des Européens dans les deux Indes. Genève, Chez les Libraires associés, 1783-1784, 10 vol. 8°, frontispieces, folding tables, full shagreened tawny basane, smooth spine decorated and gilt, title and appendices, pebbled edges, scalloped edges, marbled endpapers (bindings rubbed, spines spotted, 3 headpieces damaged, several plates slightly spotted, rare wetness). A veritable encyclopedia of anti-colonialism in the 18th century, this work is one of the "philosophical voyages" fashionable at the time, poorly documented but a pretext for reflections on "natural law" and biting denunciations of despotism, clericalism, black slavery and colonialism. He did not hesitate to call on the collaboration of other writers, such as d'Holbach and Diderot, to whom we owe the most successful passages, and who sometimes compared him to Voltaire or Rousseau. Banned in 1772, Histoire des deux Indes was republished by Abbé Raynal in a new edition in 1774, which was immediately placed on the Index by the clergy. Condemned by the Paris Parliament, the work was burned by the executioner in the public square, ensuring its considerable success.
