BARCLAY (Jean). Argenis. Nunc primum illustrata - [Followed by]: Archombrotus et Theopompus sive Argenidis. Lugd. Batav. et Roterod. [Leiden et Rotterdam], Exofficina Hackiana, 1664, 2 vols. 8°, [28]-639-[13] p. ; [32]-624-[14] p., full contemporary vellum, ms. title on smooth spine, ms. bookplate (light scattered russetting, small worm work on qqs pages of 1st vol.). "Argenis" is an allegorical and political novel written in Latin by Jean Barclay in Rome in 1621, and published the same year in Paris by Nicolas Buon. It was translated very quickly into most European languages and very often republished in the XVIIᵉ and XVIIIᵉ centuries. A good copy.
