THANGO (François). "Composition". Oil on panel, signed lower - Lot 370
THANGO (François). "Composition". Oil on panel, signed lower right corner. Size of support and subject: 56 x 92.5 cm (small stains, fine trimming at corners). François Thango (1936-1981) was a Congolese painter from Brazzaville. He is considered a great precursor of painting in Central Africa. He painted without an easel, using huge rolls of canvas laid flat. His works are characterized by a unique graphic style and the use of bright colors, with thick, black outlines that delineate space and shapes. His creations are often inspired by his retreats to the forest, where he drew visions, stories and questions, depicting mythical animals, plants and monstrous figures. His career took off when he represented the Poto-Poto school at the Brussels World Fair in 1958. In 1961, six of his works were shown in New York, and he was awarded the UNICEF prize in Paris.
