MAILAENDER (Thomas). Cyanotypes. Asnières, La Sira, 2019, in - Lot 121
MAILAENDER (Thomas). Cyanotypes. Asnières, La Sira, 2019, in-folio, illustrated publisher's blue cloth, slipcase. First edition printed in 30 numbered copies on Arches vellum, signed by the artist (ex. n° 19/30). Each cover is unique. Cyanotype, invented by John Herschel in 1842, is a simple, inexpensive printing process characterized by its cyan-blue tint. Popularized as a printing method by botanist Anna Atkins, who used it for her herbariums, cyanotype became a widespread photographic process in the late 19th century. With his usual sense of humor, Mailaender (Marseilles, °1979) has taken this process and used it to challenge and satirize the parameters of contemporary art. The images come from his "Fun Archive", a personal collection and bank of absurd, anonymous images gleaned from the Net over the years. Mint condition.
