GROSSMANN (Rudolf). Unold von Kaltenquell. Berlin, Paul Cass - Lot 654
GROSSMANN (Rudolf). Unold von Kaltenquell. Berlin, Paul Cassirer, 1922, broadside, half-grey cloth, illustrated upper board (binder stained, corners slightly dulled, inner hinges reinforced, scattered light russets). First edition of 180 numbered copies on laid paper, signed by Grossmann, comprising 55 hand-colored lithographs with, in the lower part, Grossmann's text relating the story of Unold von Kaltenquell, some with an erotic charge. Rudolf Grossmann (Freiburg, 1882-1941) was a German painter and illustrator. After studying in Munich and Paris, he traveled with Jules Pascin to Belgium and Holland. In 1910, he settled in Berlin. He illustrated numerous books and taught art. In 1934, after the Nazi seizure of power, he was dismissed and returned to Freiburg. His art was declared degenerate, and 206 of his works were confiscated. In 1937, three pieces were exhibited in the Nazi exhibition of degenerate art. Uncommon.
