[Galerie MTL] - "Deurle 11/7/73". Catalog. Carl Andre, John - Lot 648
[Galerie MTL] - "Deurle 11/7/73". Catalog. Carl Andre, John Baldessari, Robert Barry, Marcel Broodthaers, Victor Burgin, Ian Burn-Mel Ramsden, Cadere, Dan Graham, Douglas Huebler, Joseph Kosuth, Sol LeWitt, Robert Ryman, Joost A. Romeu, Lawrence Weiner, Ian Wilson. Brux, MTL, 1973, 8°, br. First edition of 250 copies, an extremely rare and important catalog in the history of conceptual and minimalist art. In March 1973, Fernand Spillemaeckers, in collaboration with Anny De Decker and Paul Maenz, decided to organize a public discussion between artists, in parallel with an exhibition where these artists could present their work. However, due to organizational problems, the exhibition was cancelled just before the opening. Spillemaeckers decided to present the documentation, texts and printed works in black folders on tables in a room in the museum. A round wooden bar by Cadere was the only physical work on display. Spillemaeckers also had the artist's texts published in a booklet. A controversy arose between Spillemaeckers on the one hand, and De Decker and Maenz on the other, over the legitimacy of this publication. Tensions also existed between Buren and Cadere, who had not been officially invited. Buren did not want Cadere to take part in the exhibition, irritated by the fact that Cadere was exhibiting his work uninvited... Enclosed is a typed letter (statement and explanation) from Anny De Decker, Paul Maenz and Marc Poirier on this controversy, followed by Fernand Spillemaeckers' reply, as well as the latter's reply to Paul Maenz's "Notes". Also enclosed: Fernand Spillemaeckers' death announcement, in an envelope addressed to Yves Gevaert. Fernand Spillemaeckers (1938-1978), an artist, art critic and theorist influenced by structuralism and semiology, directed Galerie MTL from 1970 until his death in 1978.
