APOLLINAIRE (Guillaume). Calligrammes. Poems of peace and wa - Lot 517
APOLLINAIRE (Guillaume). Calligrammes. Poems of peace and war (1913-1916). With a portrait of the author by Pablo Picasso, woodcut by R[ené] Jaudon. Paris, Mercure de France, 1918, 8°, 205 p., bradel green half vellum, imitation crocodile-skin paper boards, smooth spine titled in gold, covers and spine cons. (binding by Stroobants). First edition of the first thousand (no. 830) on publisher's paper. Back cover stamped in red ink "Baisse temporaire 30 %". Enriched copy of the rare subscription form for Guillaume Apollinaire's album of lyrical and colored ideograms, "Et moi aussi je suis peintre", which was due to appear in August 1914, but remained in the printer's proof stage due to the outbreak of war (they were first published in 1987). "Calligrammes" is dedicated to René Dalize, pseudonym of René Dupuy, his classmate at the Collège Saint-Charles in Monaco, who was killed on the front in 1917. A good, untrimmed copy, in a singular period binding by Jean Stroobants, who died in 1922.
