LE CORBUSIER. Salubra [Architectural Polychromy]. Basel, Sal - Lot 486
LE CORBUSIER. Salubra [Architectural Polychromy]. Basel, Salubra, 1931, 4° oblong, full publisher's blue percaline (traces of freckling on upper cover; of the 62 sample plates in our copy, 8 are damaged and 23 cut out, otherwise a good copy). Complete with 2 pairs of bristol-finished glasses (but without the text page). First edition. In association with the "Salubra" wallpaper firm, Le Corbusier produced two catalogs. The first, published in autumn 1931, includes 43 shades and 12 "color keyboards". Each keyboard is made up of 31 colors, which can be associated with each other using bristol board glasses. "The two glasses that come with the collection enable you to make a definitive choice by isolating either two tones or three tones on background values. Superimposing the two glasses isolates a single tone on two background values". Le Corbusier was convinced of the impact of color on human behavior and feelings. With an eye for the smallest detail, he designed a chromatic range in the form of samples that refer to "moods": Ciel, Espace, Sable, Paysage, Velours and Mur... The application technique was innovative: oil-based paint was applied to surfaces in paper rolls. Le Corbusier saw several advantages in this method. In any case, the result is a much more stable and perfectly uniform color. Very rare.
