[PROUST (Marcel). Les Plaisirs et les Jours. Illustrations b - Lot 226
[PROUST (Marcel). Les Plaisirs et les Jours. Illustrations by Madeleine Lemaire. Preface by Anatole France and four piano pieces by Reynaldo Hahn. Paris, Calmann-Lévy, 1896, 4°, 3 ff., X-273 p. (miscalculated 271) and 1 f., br. with full illustrated cover (spine very slightly cracked). First edition. 1/20 head copy on Japon impérial, containing an original watercolor by Madeleine Lemaire (23 x 14 cm watercolor pasted on cardboard). Marcel Proust's first written and published work, composed between 1892 and 1895, it is beautifully illustrated by Madeleine Lemaire. Madeleine Lemaire, a watercolorist and miniaturist, ran one of the most popular literary and artistic salons of the Belle Époque. It was here that Proust met Reynaldo Hahn and Robert de Montesquiou, before several stays in Dieppe, notably in the summer of 1895, where he spent three months polishing this collection of prose poems and short stories, which draws heavily on Decadentism and Montesquiou's work in particular (Kolb, VI, 178). A fine and rare copy on Japon.
