MARTIN DU GARD (Roger). Jean Barois. P., NRF, 1913, 8°, full - Lot 193
MARTIN DU GARD (Roger). Jean Barois. P., NRF, 1913, 8°, full red morocco, boards decorated with a beautiful geometrical figure formed by a sextuple gilt fillet, spine with 5 threaded nerves, ornamented caissons in a double gilt fillet, gilt author, title and date, gilt filleted edges, gilt edges, full brown morocco linings set with a gilt fillet, wine-red moire endpapers, covers and spine cons, edged slipcase (trace of bookplate, margins of frontispiece stained) (binding signed Semet et Plumelle). First edition with frontispiece featuring a reproduction of Michelangelo's L'Esclave. 1/30 numbered copies on Arches laid paper, the only large paper (ex. no. 18). Close to Joyce's novelistic research, this work, written in dialog scenes, linked by indications similar to stage directions, introduced a new novelistic technique, which the future Nobel Prize-winner for literature did not abandon until he began writing Thibault. A fine and rare first edition copy in a perfectly executed lined binding by Semet et Plumelle.
