[Camus, Gracq, Cocteau, Giono, Malraux and Jean Paulhan]. Se - Lot 84
[Camus, Gracq, Cocteau, Giono, Malraux and Jean Paulhan]. Set of 6 handwritten (or typescript) letters, including 3 framed, addressed to Jean Petit, vice-president of the Maison des étudiants in Louvain (Belgium). All replies are polite, detailed refusals to take part in a conference organized in Louvain. While Giono wrote "I don't know how to give a lecture, I've never given a lecture, and my hair bristles at the very thought", Gracq was not available, even though he was very touched by the request. Camus, for his part, refused on principle to take part in any new activity, declining to do so on October 21, 1952, and Cocteau cited reasons of health and reserve in support of his non-attendance. As for Jean Paulhan, he never gave lectures, and André Malraux had commitments that prevented him from considering any speaking engagements. This set of letters is a cocktail of varied negative responses / Set of 6 pieces.
