BROCH (Hermann). Der Tod des Vergil. N.Y., Pantheon Books, 1 - Lot 81
BROCH (Hermann). Der Tod des Vergil. N.Y., Pantheon Books, 1945, large 8°, 522 p., bradel half black cloth publisher, red head (head spotted). First edition in which Hermann Broch reconstructs the last eighteen hours of the Roman poet Virgil's life. Daughter of Leopold Zechner, Chairman of the Vienna School Board, and sister of Ingrid Leodolter, Austrian Minister of Health, Ilse Zechner married writer and social-democrat philanthropist Wilhelm Meissel. Ilse Zechner was a gifted, intelligent but not very pretty young woman who had to leave Vienna to escape Nazism. She studied at Princeton and met the Kahlers and Hermann Broch. After the war, she worked as a teacher in Vienna and was killed in a car accident with her husband. A good copy.
