WILDE (Oscar). The Picture of Dorian Gray. Melbourne, Ward L - Lot 40
WILDE (Oscar). The Picture of Dorian Gray. Melbourne, Ward Lock and Co, [1891], 8° (19.1 x 12.5 cm), 334 p., bradel full English green felt decorated with a charming monochrome floral composition, fancy paper lining, uncons. cover, green paper folder with gold titling on spine, green paper slipcase (rare traces of use). First edition, with the misprint on p. 208 ("nd" instead of "and"). In our copy, the "P" section was bound after the "Q" section. A fine copy of the first edition in book form. "The Portrait of Dorian Gray" is Oscar Wilde's first novel, first published in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in July 1890. Six new chapters were added to this first appearance in book form, with numerous additions and variants. On its release, the book was fiercely criticized, and its publication did Wilde considerable harm.
