LEMPRIERE (G.). Voyage dans l'Empire de Maroc et le Royaume de Fez, fait pendant les années 1790 et 1791 (...). Translated from the English by M. de Sainte-Suzanne. A Paris, chez Tavernier ; Cordier et Legras, 1801, 8°, 383 p., full shagreened basane, gilt framed lace on covers, smooth ornate spine with red title-piece, speckled edges, grained endpapers (head of spine damaged, upper jaw split, rubbed edges, upper corners dull, edges partially soiled, inside fresh). First French edition, illustrated with 2 engraved plates (views of Tangier and Marrakech) and a large folding map of northern Africa. George Lemprière (1864-1934), surgeon to the son of Sultan Muley Absulem, stayed in Morocco from 1789 to 1790, and was privileged to enter the royal harem, which he describes in detail.
