[HOLBEIN, Hans]. Icones historiarum veteris testamenti. Lyon, Jean Frellon, 1547, 8°, full glazed calf (binding worn and damaged, 1st plate detached, broad central wetness without affecting engravings, small brownish stain at upper corner, scattered russets). First edition of this famous suite by Hans Holbein the Younger, woodcut by Hans Lutzelberger. It consists of 94 half-page vignettes illustrating the Old Testament, renowned for their beauty and finesse of execution. Each plate is accompanied by a Latin text and a French quatrain by Gilles Corrozet. The last printed leaf features four medallions with the effigies of the evangelists, not found in previous editions. One of the finest illustrated books of the 16th century.
