MARTINS (Maria). "Sans écho", "Jay", "Impossible", "Place à - Lot 282
MARTINS (Maria). "Sans écho", "Jay", "Impossible", "Place à l'implacable" and "Comme une liane" (1946). Set of 5 black etchings printed on laid paper, titled, dated, justified and signed in pencil. Unique edition of 60. New York, Valentine Gallery, 1946, support size: (5 x) 25.5 x 34 cm; subject size: (5 x) 13.7 x 17.5 cm. Engravings in perfect condition (with the exception of a small wet spot on the lower left edge of one engraving). Maria Martins (1894-1973) was born in Campanha, Brazil. She studied music and painting before moving to Belgium in 1936. She studied with Oscar Jespers. In New York, during the Second World War, she met the painter Stanley William Hayter and the Surrealists in exile. She has a love affair with Marcel Duchamp and serves as a model for the artist's work "Etant donnés" (a painting that will only be revealed to the public after Duchamp's death, according to his wishes). Maria Martins turned to sculpture under the influence of Jacques Lipschitz after moving to the United States. Lipschitz encouraged Maria to explore her Brazilian identity in her work. Her works are charged with eroticism and surrealism. She exhibited at Galerie Maeght in 1947, then at Galerie Julien Levy, where André Breton wrote the preface to the catalog. A beautiful and rare set.
