VAN GOGH - Letters from Vincent Van Gogh to Émile Bernard. P - Lot 737
VAN GOGH - Letters from Vincent Van Gogh to Émile Bernard. Paris, Ambroise Vollard, 1911, 4°, glazed blond half-calf with corners, gilt separating fillets on covers, smooth spine illustrated with 2 figures in black, morocco title-pieces, gilt laces, gilt head, combed endpapers, cons. cover, slipcase (spines and headpieces rubbed). First edition on simili-Japan. The edition of the letters is preceded by a "Recueil des publications sur Vincent Van Gogh faites depuis son décès par Émile Bernard précédées d'une préface nouvelle par le même auteur". "Between 1887 and 1889, Vincent wrote very personal letters to the painter and writer Émile Bernard (1868-1941), future founder of the Pont-Aven School, whom he had met in Paris at the Cormon studio during the winter of 1886-87. Most of these letters begin with "Mon cher copain Bernard", and are accompanied by Vincent's own sketches and studies: Arbres fruitiers, Verger, Chambre à coucher, Semeur au soleil couchant, les moes de la Camargue and les Barques des Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. The painter also comments, sometimes very critically, on his young friend's drawings and poems. He shares his thoughts on painting and reveals certain aspects of his private life. A fine copy.
